Perspectives: Postmodernism Key Words 8

  • Hyperrealism
    • Hyperreality is an inability of consciousness to distinguish reality from a simulation of reality, especially in technologically advanced postmodern societies. Hyperreality is seen as a condition in which what is real and what is fiction are seamlessly blended together so that there is no clear distinction between where one ends and the other begins. Individuals may find themselves, for different reasons, more in tune or involved with the hyperreal world and less with the physical real word. Some famous theorists of hyperralism include Jean Baudrillard and Umberto Eco.
  • Simulation
    • An imitation of the operation of a real-world process or system. The act of simulating something first requires that a model be developed; this model represents the key characteristics, behaviours and functions of the selected physical or abstract system or process.
  • Simulacra
    •  A representation or imitation of a person or thing. Something that replaces reality with its representation. Jean Baudrillard in "The Precession of Simulacra" defines this term as follows: "Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being, or a substance.
  • 'Fake News'
    • A type of yellow journalism (an american term for journalism that presents little or no legitimate well-researched news while instead using eye-catching headlines for increased sales) or propaganda that consists of deliberate disinformation or hoaxes spread via traditional print and broadcast news media or online social media. The term is often used to refer to fabricated news. This type of news, found in traditional news, social media or fake news websites, had no basis in fact, but is presented as being factually accurate.
