Fantastic Voyage- Reflective Statement
Overall this project has been quite challenging but I feel like I have learned a lot and am pleased with my end result.
I struggled in the beginning after I had finished researching and needed to move onto designing as designing and art direction is not my strongest area. I found it quite difficult to 'think outside of the box' and while I could have taken this project down many different routes I thought about the brief very literally and started designing an animation that simply took you through the steps of flower pollination.
Although, after I had a strong art direction of the low poly effect I felt I was able to develop my concept art quite easily. I also enjoyed the process of storyboarding and writing the script as I knew what had to be said and shown from the research I did and so it was just a matter of explaining the science in a coherent way.
After the pitch, I was able to start bringing everything to life in Maya, I enjoyed the process of modelling, although I did sometimes struggle with the actual animating. I am also quite pleased with how I managed to rig and skin the bee.
When it came to rendering I came across one major problem of some of my textures were causing Maya to crash, but I got it sorted in the end and I know how to not make that mistake again. Also, I'm pleased that I did manage to get everything rendered and composited in time for the crit as I'm glad that I got to show it in its finished form.
In the crit it was mentioned how I need to work on becoming more of a designer and art director, and so hopefully I can work on this in the summer. Also I might try and improve my animation a bit in the summer but I will need to work out which parts I should focus on.
