Maya Lesson 1

Yesterday was our first Maya class! We were shown around the basics of Maya which included learning about the left-hand-side toolbar, which is where you can find the move, rotate, scale tools as well as where you can change the panel layout, which changes the perspective that you're looking from.

I also learned that there are different sections which you can change between depending on what you are trying to do. These include modelling, rigging, animation, FX and rendering. I also learned that the channels and layers are found on the right-hand-side.

The first thing we did on Maya was creating a 'polygon primitive' and then playing around with scale, position and rotation of the object. I also learned about subdivisions of the shapes, which allow you to move only sections of a face, for example.

I also learned a few shortcuts which include:
B= soft select
Ctrl Z= undo
Ctrl D= dulplicate

We were then set the task of building a simple house. When making my first attempt I used separate polygons for the main part of the house, the roof and the windows. This made it quite hard to make as you had to make sure they all fitted together properly.

However I learned that a much easier way to create the house was to use a single cube primitive. I subdivided the cube by 2 in the width, and then used the scale tool on the edge that was created in the middle of the top face of the cube to drag it upwards to create the shape of the roof. I then duplicated this shape, rotated and scaled it down to create the windows and the door.

  1. Welcome to the world of Maya! I remember the first few lessons and tutorials were the most difficult...getting used to the interface and the tools can be daunting, but as you learn more about what the tools can do it gets easier :) nice work so far!
